Build – that difficult second album

This month, for the second year running, Belfast was host to a web design conference with world class speakers that included Liz Danzico, Dan Cederholm and Frank Chimero. With a line up like this, organiser Andy McMillan and Build were once again destined for glory and it produced even better results than I expected.

There are a number of high praise reviews across the web. For a detailed analysis I suggest you check out this re-cap from the Web Standardistas or this article from Simon Collison.

What was different?

As many have said, this year Build was more than just a conference. It hosted a week-long festival of fringe events featuring evening exhibitions, quizzes, a charity soccer tournament and more – there really was something for everyone. That’s probably why people came from all over the globe (as far as India) to be there. The amazing mix of people created a week long social scene that I was afraid to miss.

Conference day

The main conference itself achieved a nice balance of original thought and practical application. Inspiring some to get stuck right in, leaving others to think and work hard for their takeaways. Once again, there was something for everyone.

A personal highlight for me was Tim Brown of Typekit. Being relatively new to the public speaking scene, he took a lot of people by surprise when he took to the stage and delivered a talk on Web Typography that could only be described as first rate. He was even kind enough to pop round to our studio for a chat the next day. Thanks, Tim!

What’s next for Build?

With some speakers already announced, dare I say it; next year is shaping up to be even better: Jason Santa Maria, Simon Collison, Ethan Marcott and the lovable, local Standardistas?  – I’m excited already.
Years from now, I think we’ll remember Build 2010 as the year Andy started building a brand that has the potential to be recognised worldwide. It’s an incredible achievement and this is (hopefully) just the beginning. Belfast has a true gem on its hands in Build. Well done to everyone involved, you done good.
