Belfast’s Second Pecha Kucha Night

If you didn’t make it down to the Black Box for Pecha Kucha last night then you missed out on a great nights craíc with an eclectic lineup of creative folk. The theme for the night was curiosity.

Pecha Kucha Belfast

Our very own David Hughes did us proud, taking 6-odd minutes and 20 slides to talk about how curiosity has served him well:

“It dawned on me that everything that I’ve achieved in my (short) professional career, I owe to curiosity. I learned the core technologies of the web, HTML and CSS by viewing source for hours on end. By reverse-engineering what other people had done on the web, not only did this help me produce things, but helped me truly understand the theory behind it. When I gained this understanding, only then could I start getting creative and produce my own things.

An entire industry has been built on people viewing source. Isn’t that fantastic? It’s curiosity on a grand scale.”

David Hughes

Last night was Belfast’s second Pecha Kucha Night (co-sponsored by Atto & Front), and it was great to see the place packed to the gills with creatives of all disciplines, from thespians to graphic designers. It was my first experience of Pecha Kucha, and it didn’t disappoint; even if the talks hadn’t been interesting and entertaining (they were), it’s hard to beat the look of fear in a speaker’s eyes as their slides progress just before they expected…

That’s the second Front blog post I’ve appeared in recently. Cracking.

David’s talk was very good, interesting and well delivered.

I wish I had off brushed my hair for that photo.

Had a great nite @pknbelfast - all talks were very interesting and in particular young Hughes raised the issue of “view source” which is an action you do without thinking at times but is such an important one.

Glad there was water in his pint glass this time!

That sounds like it was a really cool night. David’s talk sounds like it was a good’un too! Are those slides online anywhere?

It’s so true – curiosity is often at the root of all learning.

Hi Mark,

I could put my slides online, but they wouldn’t make much sense out of context. It’s basically 20 (slightly random, but related) images.

As far as I know, the talks will be going online in all their glory. Not looking forward to that.

@units, @robert thanks for the kind words, chaps.
